Knotting, crochet, embroidery and netting techniques or tools are to be identified in tatting. <br />Georgia Seitz found 7 methods to tat. What she does not mention is the fact that the needle used as a shuttle gave in the French spoken books (like the "Manuel des Demoiselles" a border named "Frivolité". So before 1828 there was a way to make something similar. My guess is that later the French term for tatting was used because of the similarity of the effect and of the movement, even done with another tool. After all, we use our mobile phones and they far away fromt he original ones... <br />I would add to the 7 ones the tatting done with the celtic needle wich is a netting tool. <br />We have the Josephine knot from Josephine de Beauharnais, consort of Napoleon I...
